BAY AREA WAVES
Unit #3 (CA) - Unit # 3 (CA) - The Unit installed their 2003-2004 officers at their July meeting. A reporter from the San Jose Mercury News newspaper and his photographer  were present during the installation, and had the privilege of speaking with the  various members who were attending.  An in depth article appeared in the newspaper outlining the volunteer work  and objectives of the very busy ladies in the Unit. The reporter expressed his admiration for the women of the Unit and  for the work they had done during WWII and afterwards. Many of the members participated in an Ice Cream Social for  Women Veterans at the Palo Alto Veterans  Administration Hospital in August.  The ladies celebrated their 22nd  anniversary of the Unit (8/2/81) at their  August meeting.

ROADRUNNER
Unit # 4 (NM) - The unit hosted the Region III Conference. The Conference  was well attended by several of our unit members and also ladies from Utah and  Arizona. First VP Sharon Woods was  our special guest. A memorial service  for our departed members was held at  the NM Veterans Memorial. Some of  the ladies rode the tram to the restaurant  at the top of the Sandia Mountains and  enjoyed a good meal and a wonderful  view of the city lights. The Unit has participated  in the annual Sea Service  Memorial Day ceremonies and the  WAVES Birthday celebration.

GATEWAY WAVES
Unit # 5 (MO) – The unit is honoring member, Edna Frank Dummerth “Frankie”. Prior to becoming a WAVE,  “Frankie” was a catcher in the All American  Girls Professional Baseball League. She has been a member of the Baseball  Hall of Fame since 1988 and attended  the 60th anniversary of the League and reunion in Cooperstown in September.

KEYSTONE WAVES
Unit # 6 (PA) – Navaho Indian teenagers were the guests of Elizabeth Robinson and friends. They enjoyed the cities of  Philadelphia and Washington,  D.C. A trip to the NJ. shore was a  treat. They loved the ocean. Many members helped the Bristol Elks serve the Veterans of the VA Nursing Home in Philadelphia. It was well attended on 23  August. Member Ruthie Severino is the  newly appointed Vice-President for the  2004 Convention. Go to it, Ruthie. Your  own Keystone WAVES are with you.

HEART OF AMERICA
Unit # 9 (KS) – The unit’s June meeting was held at the American Legion, Overland,  KS. Don Turrentine, docent for National Frontier Trails Center spoke on  the Lewis & Clark Trails. The unit continues to support the Heartspring Project,
located in Wichita, KS, by collecting General  Mills Box Tops for Education and Tyson’s Project A+ programs. The August meeting was held at Cascone’s  Italian Restaurant in Kansas City, MO  with 26 members present. The speaker was Otto Handwerk, retired FBI Agent.  The topic was about Fraud & Identity  Theft. Interesting and helpful, it alerted us to be very careful when discarding  any papers with our ID and name.

GARDEN STATE WAVES
Unit # 16 (NJ) – A group of members enjoyed special entertainment honoring all WWII veterans and all veterans and families at the 4-H Fairgrounds in August. There were many exhibits of WWII equipment and memorabilia. It  was a full afternoon with dance groups,  singing, and the haunting music of the 1940’s, and good food. Best of all was the mingling of the old and the young recognizing our military of the past and the brave young men and women that are again answering our countries call.

OLD IRONSIDES
Unit #17 (MA) – The unit is busy preparing for the coming year. Their records show they have lost 9 members and gained two for the past year giving them

a total membership of 172. The unit reflects what other units are experiencing –unpaid dues in addition to deaths. The unit will continue to focus our energies on visiting women veterans at the various VA hospitals as well as those who are confined either to their own homes or nursing homes.

MICHIGAN WAVES
Unit # 32 (MI) – Jan Roy, former president of WAVES National, hosted the 2 August meeting in Holland, MI at the famous restaurant, “Pietro”. The Mayor of Holland gave a most interesting talk on the history of Holland and the surrounding area. Betty King, former Michigan resident and former member of this unit, was here on vacation and a guest at the gathering. Betty is rejoining the unit, even though her home residence remains in Florida. The October meeting will be held in Northern Michigan in Kalkaska…details later. Fall color should be at its peak.
