FIRST VICE PRESIDENT
Sharon Woods

It is now the end of August and it is still very hot here in Arizona. By the time you read this in October, maybe it will have cooled down a little. I’ve been very busy with my WAVES National duties this past couple of months. I sent out several letters to state directors and regional reps for their annual reports and I’m still missing four reports. Thank you, ladies, who turned them in. I really appreciate it.

August started out with the Mid-term  meeting in Nashville, which was productive and enjoyable. Your board covered a lot of ground and we will be ready to present the by-law changes and some new  ideas that we know you’ll like. My other  assignment, this month, has been working on revising our pamphlet, “Sea What  We’re All About”.

Finally, I hope all of you are out there  promoting WAVES National and recruiting  new members. The younger they are,  the longer we’ll last. Until December,  signing off for now.

RECORDING SECRETARY  Winifred “Freddie” McBride

Summer, being a time when quite a  few units take a break, means I am receiving  fewer newsletters. School will soon  start and the journalism class will be taking on the project of selecting the winners.  So, please don’t forget to enter your  newsletters. If you have not previously  sent one, please include the number of  members in your unit, and how often you publish the newsletter. We will have to  receive the final issues for judging by  May 15, as school will be out in early  June, and the class will only have until the  end of school to finish the project.

I have read every newsletter sent to me, and enjoy each and all of them.  Overwhelm me with material to read!  That gives me a really great excuse to ignore housework. See you in Philadelphia with the results.

TREASURER
Pat Childers
Hello, from North Carolina. We have had a very rainy summer, but the good  news is they announced on the evening  news that the fall foliage should be fantastic  this year, with the drought being over,  so I look forward to a trip to the mountains  in the fall. I attended the Stained  Glass Shadow Box Dedication at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA on July  19, 2003. It was a wonderful program,  hosted by RADM Thomas K. Burkhard,  MC, USN. The Guest Speaker was RADM Sally Brice-O’Hara, USCG, Commander, Coast Guard Fifth District.  Jan Roy, Immediate Past President represented  WAVES National at the ceremony.  The Tidewater Tidal WAVES have  worked hard with the Medical Center to  have this project come together. I was  pleased to see this beautiful shadow box  unveiled. This is such a worthwhile project,  but an expensive one, the total cost  was $5, 800.00. Donations are still being  accepted, so if any of you wish to make  personal contributions or if your unit  would care to make a donation, please  send them to me (see address of page 2).  All donations will be recognized in the next issue of “White Caps” in the Treasurer’s  comments.

Mid term was held in Nashville, TN,
and the ladies of the Volunteer Unit really
rolled out the red carpet. We got down to
business with the NEC meeting Friday
afternoon, then after dinner we headed off
to the Grand Ole Opry, where we enjoyed
the different entertainers, and the MC
"worked" the audience, because it is after
all a live radio broadcast, so when signaled
we hooped and hollered. Needless
to say when our group was announced,
we really made a racket, causing some of
the folks sitting near us to ask what the
organization was; imagine their surprise
to hear we were women veterans!
We found a potential new member on
Saturday morning, she was serving us our
breakfast, so Ruby Homick didn’t waste
any time in getting her an application, and
we quickly introduced her to some of the
local unit members.

REMINDER TO ALL UNIT TREASURERS:
Your Unit Financial Report was due on Sept 1st; hopefully you have  all sent them. Thanks to all who have sent  them in already, you’re doing a great job!  As you probably know this information is required by the IRS and I will be compiling  information for the IRS 990, so if you  haven’t sent me the Unit Financial Report,  please do so, ASAP !!

The Board of Directors accepted my recommendation to continue having Gloria  Galati as the Assistant Treasurer. She  has been very helpful to me during the  transition and it was felt that with the  upcoming Convention, it would be too  disruptive to change banks and positions  at this time. I want to thank, Cheri  Holmes; Central Coast Wind and WAVES  Unit #90 and Adele Voell, MAL for volunteering  for the position. You both are  well qualified, and we appreciate you’re  willingness to become involved in  WAVES National.

ASSISTANT TREASURER
Gloria Galati

Just a couple of notes to all unit treasurers. Please review each new membership  application this next year before submission to me to insure that the  Referred By____ is completed. This is to  track personnel for our national membership  contest. Winners to be announced at  the 2004 national convention in Philadelphia.  This is a great opportunity for fun  and will increase WAVES National membership.

Also, unit treasurers please consider submitting your 2004 national dues as soon as possible. When submitting unit dues transmittals please insure that member’s  I.D. number and most current address and phone number is listed on the  transmittal. This will be the address  where the White Caps are forwarded.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at the phone number or E-Mail address listed on page 2. Many thanks for your continued support and kindness.
