GATEWAY WAVES
Unit # 5 (MO) - Happy Valentine's Day! Members will be distributing
Valentines to veterans at the St Louis Veterans Home. This serves as a
reminder, to remember our servicemen and women who continue to protect our
freedoms and remember to thank all who have served in the past.
KEYSTONE WAVES
Unit # 6 (PA) - Two members responded to Dr. Jill Sullivan of Arizona
U., for Navy women in band or orchestra in WWII. Sheila Martin played
clarinet in Washington, D.C. WAVES band. Gladys Hoffmire Martin played
violin in a dance band at Fleet P.O. of NYC. Both sent pictures and
programs and taped conversation to the professor. Veterans Day, WAVES of
the American Legion of Media marched with Governor E. Rendal of
Pennsylvania. 13 December, Keystone WAVES enjoyed a successful
Christmas meeting at Otto’s.
HEART OF AMERICA
Unit # 9 (KS & MO) – Members gathered for a very Merry Christmas
Potluck Luncheon at the home of Florence Hayes on 6 December. Gifts were
brought for Veterans at the hospital in Leavenworth, KS. We also
vote to send $25.00 to each of the four women veterans needing
assistance.
BLUE MOUNTAIN WAVES
Unit # 12 (PA) - At the December meeting, in lieu of a gift
exchange, donations were received and the money divided between the
U. S. Military Mothers to help them with postage for the packages
they send to our men and women on active duty, and to the Young
Marines, an organization of retired Marines for boys and girls
between the ages of 8 and 18 where the focus is on character
building through self-discipline, teamwork and leadership.
After the meeting, gifts were delivered to four women veterans
residing in a local nursing home. |
NORTH COAST
WAVES Unit # 21 (OH) - NTC Great Lakes was the highlight of an Oct.
bus trip. Members, relatives, and friends enjoyed the graduation,
tour, lunch, WAVES museum and shopping the PX. A dinner theater,
nighttime Chicago waterfront boat ride and stop at a casino completed the
trip. A former woman Marine at the Nov. meeting explained the
"Marines for Life" program. A woman lieutenant commander of the
Coast Guard Auxiliary also spoke on her duties as a pilot in Search
& Rescue for Homeland Security of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River
area. They were the only aircraft allowed in the air immediately after
9-ll. The year was closed out with the annual Christmas Party.
HEART OF DIXIE
Unit # 22 (AL) - Heart of Dixie members were honored to have
WAVES National President, Barbara Turner, as a guest at the Veterans Day
dinner. Barbara sat at the table with other honorees from the
various branches of the military. Among those being honored at the
occasion was Rosalind Fazel, member of Unit 22, recently retired
from Navy Reserves in October 2003. Members had their Christmas Party at a
local restaurant with thirteen members and six guests present. Karen
Long, VAChaplain, and Linda Gaddy, Women Veterans Coordinator at VA
Medical Center were among the guests. Money was given to the money tree to
help veterans in our local VAHospital. One of Unit 22 charter
members, Sadie Elizabeth Huguley, passed away in November. She
will be greatly missed.
LEATHERSTOCKING WAVES
Unit # 26 (NY) – It’s been a hectic 2003, but the unit enjoyed
working together. January, the unit donated $100.00 for the Herkimer
County bus shuttle service for veterans having medical appointments
at the VAclinic. February, the unit collected for local food
pantries. In April, donation of $100.00 was made to the Red Cross for
needed items for soldiers in Iraq. 2 members attended the Northeast
conference in Lancaster, PA. In July, the unit donated $50.00 to the
Philadelphia Convention Committee; plus the favors for |
one luncheon at the convention. In September,
many WAC women attended the unit meeting to exchange veteran news.
In October, the unit donated American flags for the Martin Luther King
Elementary classes in Utica, NY. In December, the unit donated sweatshirts
and pants for veterans in the hospital More items were also donated to the
Food Pantries.
GULF COAST WAVES
Unit # 27 (FL) – The unit sponsored a bingo party for the
Florida State Veterans Nursing Home during the month of November. In
December, they held a Christmas party for the women veterans at the
Florida State Veterans Nursing Home, bringing gifts for the women veterans
and entertaining them with music and Christmas songs. They also supplied
lap robes, Christmas cards and books for the veterans. Atotal of $150.00
worth of food was donated to the Mid Florida community Service
Agency during November and December.
GOLDEN WEST
Unit # 31 (CA) The unit started the Christmas season with a
holiday luncheon at the Katella Grill in Orange. A gift exchange (bring
one, get one) was held with table decorations (red poinsettias)
raffled, with the proceeds going to the fund for grocery certificates for
the Seal Beach Weapons Center enlisted personnel. From time to time,
invitations are issued to small groups stationed there, to attend unit
meetings so they might become acquainted with the group. Each month,
a member, to be put to use by those in need, collects unused eyeglasses.
The February meeting will be held at the Marie Callendars’ Restaurant in
Garden Grove. The Golden West unit was delighted to welcome two new
members at this meeting, bringing the present membership to 59.
PIEDMONT TAR HEEL
Unit # 44 (NC) - Unit members grieve the loss of Virginia
Mattson who served the unit long and well as a leader and the
initiator of meaningful projects. She helped create interest in the USCG
Women Veterans Historical Project donating her own oral history and
memorabilia to the Archive. Her favorite project was the awarding of
certificates and |
