Unit
# 32 (MI) – The unit’s fall meeting was held at the Blue Lake Township
Hall near Kalkaska in Northern Michigan.
Food
prepared by the local ladies was delicious. Color was at its peak and the
trip was most enjoyable. Mike Kegley, in charge of the Bay City Museum,
announced a transfer of the U.S.S. Edson (DD 946), presently berthed in
New York, will be transported to Bay City in the near future. This will
be a permanent museum display. The unit voted to make a donation to the
Saginaw Valley Cadets, as well as the WAVES National Stained Glass Fund.
The "A Few Good Women" display of WWII memorabilia at the Women’s Museum
in Lansing has been disbanded and material returned to the service women.
CONNECTICUT
YANKEES
Unit
#42 (CT) - Activities this new season began
with the annual picnic on a sunny
Sunday at the CT shore. Fall
activities
include our Mystery Auction
fundraiser, attendance at the annual
Red,
White & Blue Mass at the Norwich
Cathedral,
which honors service women
and men, and participation in the Veterans
Day
Parade in Hartford, the largest
vets
parade in this area. Unit Christmas Banquet
is held in December, and we
celebrate
unit growth by eight new members,
bringing
our unit membership over
the
70 mark.
PIEDMONT
TAR HEELS
Unit
# 44 (NC) – Unit members enjoyed
a visit
and lunch at River Landing Retirement
Home
featuring a golf course and
lots
of activities for active seniors. The
unit
also visited the High Point Museum's
exhibit,
"A Call to Arms." Memorabilia
from
veterans in the area were displayed.
Members
are planning to attend
the
annual Women Veterans' Project
Luncheon
at UNCG and to meet women,
both
military and civilian, who has served.
The speaker will be a Red Cross
Civilian
Worker. In December, the unit celebrates
16-year membership in WN. |
FINGER
LAKES
Unit
# 49 (NY) - In October, unit members
helped
out at the Susan B. Anthony
house
with tours, etc. In November, the
unit
held the Women Veterans Recognition Tea
at the Canandaigua VAMC, and
participated
in the Veteran’s Day wreath
laying
service/ceremony and luncheon.
Finger
Lakes unit purchased gifts for the
women
patients at the VA, helping with
Gift
Wrap and Gift Distribution Day at the
VA.
The unit also had the annual luncheon
to
celebrate the holiday season, which
was enjoyed by all who attended.
NORTHWEST
FLORIDA
WAVES
Unit
# 52 (FL) - A speaker from Metro
Crime
Prevention of Florida spoke at the
October
meeting. He gave many hints
on
how to protect yourself in your home, parking
lots, car, against rape, etc. The
unit
sponsored a table at the Annual
Retired
Military Seminar aboard the
Naval
Air Station, Pensacola in October
and
passed out approximately 15 applications
to
prospective members. Plans
have
been made for the unit to participate in
the Veterans Day Parade. The committee
continues in planning the All
Women
Veterans Luncheon.
FIVE
SEASONS
Unit
# 53 (IA) – The needy veterans of
Linn
County, Iowa were the beneficiaries
of
17 plus bags of foodstuffs/toiletries
gathered
by the unit. Similar donations
were
made to Camp Courageous for the
handicapped.
A brick was purchased for
$35
to be placed in 2004 in a walk at
Cedar
Rapids, Iowa VETERAN'S MEMORIAL
PARK. Brick will read: “WAVES
NATIONAL 5 SEASONS WAVES
Unit #53”

AGO
Unit
# 61 (TX) – The unit observed Veterans
Day
Ceremonies. An Open House
honored
all women veterans on 22
November.
Asst. Veterans Service Officer
was
the guest speaker. WAVES AGO
unit
will make Christmas comfort kits for women
veterans.
MICHIANA
TIDAL WAVES
Unit
# 63 (IN) – The unit celebrated the
15th
anniversary dinner with 20 in attendance plus
a new member. December
4th,
the unit is in charge of a Round Table |
program
and Christmas party for women
veterans
at the Indiana Veterans Home.
Have

Unit
# 66(FL) - The unit’s meeting, 20
September,
was held with newly installed
officers.
The guest speaker from the
Sheriff's
Department spoke on women's
safety.
Faithful member, Margaret Killian
(83
yrs.) passed away. She will be missed!
COLUMBIA
RIVER RIPPLES
Unit
# 70 (OR) - November is a busy
time
for all of us. Unit members participated
in two Veteran's
Parades. Several ladies
attended the 8th Living History at
Milwaukie
High School. Freddie
McBride
also spoke at one other high
school
and a middle school. The unit has
an
annual Lasagna Feed and Bazaar in
November,
which is open to friends of
the
unit and members of other military
organizations.
It is not only fun, but also
helps raise funds for
the unit projects. The
members voted that the Christmas
meeting
be focused on gifts of food, toys
and
cash for the Milwaukie American
Legion
Auxiliary to add to the Legion's
Christmas
Basket Program. This program
is
for the families of veterans who are
in need.
WAVES
FORE & AFT
Unit
#72 (OH) - Unit members volunteer
at
the VA hospital. One member takes
the
hospitality cart around to the patients
with
books, cards etc. The unit donates
various
greeting cards and stamps for
the
patients who would like to send special occasion
cards to family and friends
while
they are hospitalized.
CALOOSA
WAVES
Unit
# 76 (FL) – Recently, the unit met at
the
Red Lobster. 22 members were
present.
The unit is raising money for a
new
puppy (the third one from Unit # 76)
for
the community’s seeing-eye dog program. Steven
Anders of the United States
Navy (Metro Crime Protection) is
scheduled
to speak at the next meeting.
Self-protection
will be the topic.
