HEART OF DIXIE

Unit #22 (AL) – The Annual Volunteer Recognition program of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center was recently held at the Harbert Center in Birmingham. One of our members, Millie Flemming, was recognized for 3,780 hours of volunteer work. On a sadder note, the unit lost three charter members in the past year.

GOLDEN WEST

Unit # 31(CA) – The unit celebrated Armed Forces Day with a fundraiser in a member’s back yard. With colorful umbrellas and bright table clothes more than 50 members attended a fundraiser/KFC luncheon/fashion show from a members trunk in her attic. A 100-year-old graduation dress started the show, which then proceeded through the years ending with several wedding gowns and of course, showed a bride in uniform. Models were unit members’ daughters and granddaughters. Proceeds will support the unit’s projects: Grocery certificates for the Seal Beach Weapons Center at Seal Beach, CA., enlisted personnel in need of end of the month help.

MICHIGAN WAVES

Unit #32 (MI) – The unit held their annual summer luncheon meeting on Saturday, June 28th at the famous Coyle’s Restaurant at Houghton Lake Resort. The weatherman was most cooperative with a sunny day. Kathleen Hall wore and modeled her antique hat collection. Her April appearance was cancelled due to an ice storm.

STARS & STRIPES

Unit 36 (CA) - Mr. Clint Steed, of the Navy Historical Society, who heads a group to establish a museum of navy artifacts at the San Diego NTC site, spoke at the March meeting. Anyone who ever served there is most welcome to contact him. The unit

conducted election of officers at the May meeting. The President read a meaning of the folds of a flag folding ceremony. Entertainment for the event was "Girl Talk" - talking about our military service experience.

10,000 LAKES

Unit # 37 (MN) – The Women Veterans of Minnesota held their spring luncheon on May 3, and many of the unit members chaired various committees for that annual event. At Fort Snelling National Cemetery, on 26 May, six of our members marched along with veterans of the Women Marines and the Air Force. A unit picnic was planned for the 17th of July at the picnic shelter on the grounds of the VA Medical Center.

FLORIDA FIRST COAST

Unit # 38 (FL) - President Margaret E. Wright attended the Memorial Day Ceremonies at the Veteran's Memorial Wall in downtown Jacksonville, Florida and presented a wreath in memory of WAVES National members.

MAINE WAVES

Unit # 41 (ME) The unit was host for the 8th New England Conference with about 80 members in full residence, and 8-10 daily participants. Conference was full of events consisting of general meeting, Regional Representative's meeting, Memorial service for about 80 departed members (with a WWII Fighter Plane fly-over), smaller appointments, great speakers, great tours of two well-known museums, setting, meals, ocean and weather. Many unit members were involved in Memorial Day observances. This has been a busy year.

NORTHWEST FLORIDA WAVES

Unit # 52 (FL) - The unit celebrated its 15th anniversary in May at a luncheon held at a local restaurant. 28 members and 10 guests attended. At the June meeting, the unit awarded a $500 scholarship to Brittany Broussard, a local NJROTC student. She plans to attend Florida A&M and study nursing. Unit President Jo Adamson was recently elected Post Commander of

American Legion Post #240 in Pensacola.

FIVE SEASONS

Unit # 53, (IA) – The unit watched a video of Audrey Jordahl being interviewed at the West Branch Library about her military history.  The video will be sent to the Library of Congress for the Veterans History Project.  It gave the other members an idea of what they need to include for their own military histories.

JERSEY COLONIAL WAVES

Unit # 59 (NJ) – The unit members contributed over $150 worth of items to support the southeast Morris Red Cross’s Armed Forces Emergency Services Quality of Life Program at the May meeting. Donations toward shipping costs were given to send items to locations where U.S. military members need them the most. On 6 June, nine members attended the Unveiling Ceremony of the Women Veterans Monument at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial cemetery in Arneytown, NJ. Dorothy Dempsey, of Unit # 127, who designed the Minute woman atop the monument base, stated, “Women have a long history of serving their country. Time has taken them from us, and all that remains are memories and their names carved in stone. Without memories, the past is lost. With the past to remind us, the future is lost.” Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught, USAF (RET.) was the keynote speaker.

WAVES AGO
