AREA WAVES
Unit #3 (CA) -The unit has been quite busy. The Palo Alto Veterans Administration awarded certificates and plaques for hours donated by volunteers. Gladys Bemis, for 8,750 hours; Leah Folck, 5,228; Dorothy Jones, 1,588; Donna Squadrito, 2,897; and Georgene Berglund, 500. were among those rewarded, from the unit. Alfriede Kohrer and Rosemary Bradley, not members of BAW, but whose hours are credited to WAVES National, were also honored. Several members participated in a Memorial Day Service at the Los Gatos Memorial Park, including the laying of two wreaths. The same weekend, the ladies presided over a very successful spaghetti dinner to help raise funds for various programs at the Veterans Hospital. GATEWAY WAVES Unit # 5 (MO) - Last year, unit members volunteered nearly 2300 hours. Over 1000 of these hours were with Meals on Wheels, plus veteran's facilities/activities, churches, Red Cross, childcare, home visits, nursing homes, hospitals, and other areas - PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE. All enjoyed the unit annual picnic in June as family and friends joined them. Linda Waters received a Certificate of Appreciation for her work with the Veterans Association. Members participated in Memorial Day Intra-veteran Program and Jefferson Barracks National Ceremony. KEYSTONE WAVES Unit # 6 (PA) - Bonnie Selb, NJ State Director, attended the June meeting at Willow Grove Naval Air Station. She shared ideas and preparation for the national convention here in Philadelphia in 2004. It will be a great convention as Philadelphia offers a lot. The unit will help all they can. Come to the festivities in August 2004! FIRST STATE WAVES Unit # 10 (DE) – WAVES National now has a flag displayed in the |
Chapel
of Delaware’s Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. Unit member, Ruth
Harden, one of Delaware’s commissioners of Veterans Affairs, designed the
flag using the WAVES National logo and the words “Women of the Sea Services”
underneath on a blue background. Members contributed personal articles
to the Veterans Hospital Patients Carnival, money for the Newark Memorial
Parade and to the Wilmington Memorial Parade. Members attended several
memorial ceremonies during the month of May. Five unit members were featured
in an exhibit presented by Padua Academy School for Girls of Wilmington,
DE. The exhibit was compiled last November when three students interviewed,
taped and took movies of the members, who gave brief histories of their
experiences in the Navy. A unit member donated pictures and articles for
the exhibit. The students were awarded First place for the entry at the
2003 Delaware History Day State competition. They also received an award
of Outstanding State Entry at the National History Day competition at the
University of Maryland, College Park.
BLUE MOUNTAIN WAVES Unit #12 (VA) – The unit is sending "Care" packages to the sons and daughters of members who are on active duty. These treats and practical items, from those who have been there and done that, mean a great deal to them. We are also looking forward to our annual picnic in August and making tentative plans to make a trip to Washington, DC to visit military museums and places dedicated to the Armed Forces. GARDEN STATE WAVES Unit # 16 (NJ) – Unit members traveled to Brig. Gen. Williams C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery for the dedication of the Women Veterans Memorial. The theme of the memorial is “The Spirit of the American Woman Veteran”. The design features a five-sided obelisk rising from a conical base. The obelisk of black marble will contain one insignia for each branch of the |
services
represented. At the top will stand the bronze figure “The Minute Woman”.
The figure depicts a colonial era Minute Woman with a child clinging to
her side, holding a musket in the other; ready once again to defend against
any threats to home and country. The “Minute Woman” gives full credit to
the many important contributions made by women in combat, in the tradition
of Molly Pitcher and other patriots during key moments through American
History up to and including the increasingly active roll of women in combat
missions in today’s armed forces. The keynote speaker was Brigadier General
Wilma L. Vaught, USAF (RET.).
OLD IRONSIDES Unit # 17 (MA) – The unit’s last meeting of the year was held in the southern part of Massachusetts in Middleboro. The unit is so spread out from East to West and North to South, they have to plan to suit all the members. The Service Committee reported on their activities and plans for Christmas to visit 3 VA hospitals. CAPE COD WAVES Unit #18 (MA) - The unit’s last meeting of the year was held at Dot O'Connell's house with an "inside" picnic (due to rain). Plans were set for the September meeting on USS Massachusetts, Fall River, MA with invitations out to sister units: Old Ironsides #17 and Pioneer Valley #81. NORTH COAST WAVES Unit # 21 (OH) - Five unit members attended the June 6-8 Region VII Conference in Frankenmuth, MI. Banquet speaker, Bob Heft, left the unit informed and well entertained as he narrated how he came to design our country's current 50-star flag as a 17-year-old schoolboy. A unit-sponsored black granite WN memorial stone marker "Dedicated by Sea Service Women in Honor of All Women Who Served" was dedicated on July 19 at northeastern Ohio's Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman. Donations for the memorial are welcome. |
