| Lincoln,
NE spoke to the group on Veteran Benefits and Programs that are available
to Women Veterans. The June 7th meeting was at Veterans Memorial Garden
in Lincoln, with a special tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Korean
War.
SEMWAVES Unit
#101(MI) - As we grow older, our friends leave us to receive their
heavenly reward. A very special, priceless benefactor, Marian Morris,
an Air Force retiree and Unit 101 Honorary Member passed away in May.
Unit 101 held a special Memorial Service at the funeral home. Family
and friends were very appreciative. Plans are in progress for Unit 101's
annual picnic in July and All Service Annual Luncheon in November.
Unit continues servicing the VA Hospital in Detroit, which includes providing
beanie babies to small children visiting at the hospital.
PASCO WAVES Unit # 104 (FL) – The April meeting focused on providing beautiful bags of personal care items for shut-in members of the unit. Two unit members participated in the color guard at Hudson’s Memorial Day Ceremony honoring the men and women who have made the supreme sacrifice in service of their country. The Suncoast Veterans Affiliated Council and the Aripeka Elks Lodge sponsored the ceremony. Blanche Watson escorted the Gold Star Mothers’ laying of the wreath. GREEN MOUNTAIN WAVES Unit #109 (VT) – The unit held its regular meeting at the Veterans Home, Bennington, VT, July 2, 2003. After the meeting and a brief tour, lunch was at Allsdays and Onions Restaurant. Members attended the memorial service at Cathedral of the Pines on June 7th. OCEAN STATE WAVES Unit #118 (RI) – LTC Jeannine E. Vachon of the Rhode Island National Guard was honored as the RI military woman of the Year 2003 at the 21 June luncheon. LTC Vachon was the |

Coordinator for the RI Women Veterans Memorial to honor all RI women Veterans.
55 members, including other N.E. units, and a nice representation from
the National Guard were in attendance. The Memorial was dedicated on 2
November 2002 at the Veterans Cemetery in Exeter, RI. The unit participated
in the country’s oldest Fourth of July parade in the nation, at Bristol,
RI. Plans are underway for an August picnic at Ginny Hanson’s home in Newport.
LAKE ERIE WAVES Unit # 128 (OH) – Flag Day, 14 June, the unit had 14 members present. Each one received a Flag placemat with Lake Erie WAVES Unit 128 logo. A representative from the Veterans History Project taped some of the experiences from WWII, which will be sent to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Many can tabs were sent to Ronald McDonald House. The unit’s volunteer hours were sent in. NA NALU O’HAWAII Unit #131 (HI) – The unit made a contribution to the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary for poppies they were selling for Memorial Day. Eugenia Woodward and Margaret Hatchie represented the unit at the Memorial Day ceremonies in the Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe, at which time they presented lei. The unit was represented at the 50th anniversary ending the Korean War celebrated on July 25. It started with a luau followed by a parade and memorial ceremony at the State Capitol grounds and at the National Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl. CALIFORNIA SOUTH COAST WAVES Unit # 132 (CA) – In January, the unit celebrated the Unit’s Birthday in Leisure World, Laguna Woods. In March, after a luncheon at Las Brisas Restaurant, member Natalie Zucker, a docent at the Laguna Art Museum, led a tour of the latest exhibit. In June, the Flag Day Celebration at Dana Point Yacht Club, Theresa Fernald, Art Instructor, Saddleback College, presented Our Flag In Art Over The Years. At each meeting, |
the
unit holds a fund-raiser for Camp Pendleton Marine families.
HIAWATHA SHORES Unit # 137, (MI) – The unit held their May meeting in Marquette. After lunch at Memories Restaurant in Harvey, the unit traveled to the Jacobetti Veterans Home to have the meeting so members Harriet Abramsen and Ruth Morrell could attend. On June 14th, the meeting was held in Rock. Supper was served at newsletter editor, Irene Kaukola’s home. Afterwards, they joined the Rock American Legion and Legion Auxiliary at the Veterans’ Memorial in Rock to take part in the Flag Day Celebration. All of the community’s faded and worn flags were disposed of in a dignified military manner. The July meeting was held in Newberry at the summer cottage of President Joy Sleeper. INLAND NORTHWEST UNIT # 140 (WA) - The June meeting was held in Spokane. The unit voted to contribute to the WN Scholarship Fund, to the WWII Memorial, and authorized $100 in expenditures for purchase of personal clothing items for women at the VA Hospital. The unit also continues to provide comfort bags. Delores Walk, President, has resigned her position for personal family reasons. She will continue her responsibilities for the newsletter and meeting notices. TIDEWATER TIDAL WAVES Unit # 152 (VA) - Members took part in the Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 26 May. The US Atlantic Fleet Band performed, a bugler sounded Taps and a 21-Gun Salute resounded. A vintage plane flyover climaxed the event. (Our recently returned Navy pilots, from the war in Iraq, were given the day off to spend with family.) Rudy Boesch, of TV Survivor fame and a former Navy Seal, posed for photos with unit members and left us smiling with his 'SEAL' humor. Unit member, SK1 Kathy Goodall, returned 20 June from a 6-month deployment in Kuwait. She was one of the members of Cargo Handling and Processing Group (CHAPGRU) providing support to troops fighting in Iraq. |
