I took basic training at Bainbridge NTS from May '56 - July '56 and then on to YN"A" school there. I was at the Pentagon in secret and top secret (923M3C & M5) until Oct '58. I was stationed at Barbers Point NAS from Oct '58 - Feb '61. I met my Seabee husband there and after discharge we have lived in Phoenix, Az ever since. What great years I had in the Navy.

Proud to be a Navy Wave-then and always. Boot Company 72-26 Bainbridge, MD. Company Commander, PN1 Maria Gonzalez told my parents I'd either be an admiral or in the brig. Best pal was Joan Rewa. I retired as a Master-at-Arms Chief Petty Officer in February 1996. Greatest 24 years of my life and I miss it like crazy.

My mom passed away on 4/23/09. She was Mary Henkel, born 8/1/33. She served in the WAVES during the Vietnam era. In the late 50s. Services were yesterday 4/30/09, at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas. She was always very proud of her service with the WAVES, and she said it was the happiest time in her life. Thanks to all of you for giving my Mom such wonderful memories. May she rest in peace.

In her book,"Making Waves"author Louanne Johnson states she went to boot camp at Orlando in 1970.Im almost positive Waves werent sent to Orlando until at least about 1973 when they closed Bainbridge.Something doesnt quite add up.I once emailed her and she replied that she did.Anyone out there also went to RTC Orlando in 1970 instead of Bainbridge?

Went to boot camp in June 1980, and finished in August 1980, Went to "A" school in NTTC Cory Station, "C" school at Goodfellow AFB, then was stationed in Rota for 2 years and the Roosevelt Roads for 2 years, outprocessed in Gulfport, MS, If I had it to do over, I would have stayed in and just changed jobs. (I hated what I did!) Wanted to be a HM but was convinced that Crypto was much better for me.so now I am a nurse that works on a military base caring for our wounded service members.
