The theme was “The Magic of Cleveland,” and the members who attended the WN National Convention agree it really is a magic city. The Dinner Cruise, the Taste of Cleveland, Lolly the Trolley and a visit on the submarine, USS Cod, added to the excitement of the city.

Unit 32 was well represented at the podium…. Marie Harvey took convention minutes, Dolores Maillette gave the corresponding secretary’s report, Eleanor Robinson announced the election results and Jan Roy, the newly re-elected president, ran a tight ship. We even finished early at one point. Other new officers are: Shirley Lightle, 1st Vice President, Barbara Henderson, 2nd Vice President, Winifred McBride, Recording Secretary, and Irene Weeks, Treasurer.

The keynote speaker at the Saturday night banquet was Lt. General Carol Mutter of the US Marine Corps. She was very inspiring!

There are now 6,032 members and 122 Units in WAVES National. 422 members attended the convention. A new volunteer hours report form was

distributed. We are to transfer all items to the new form and destroy all old forms. If the hours donated last year, were paid at the minimum wage rate, we would have contributed $1,400,000.

On October 15th, the chair WAVES National donated to WIMSA was dedicated. On October 19th, the T-AFS-65 Oceanographic Research Vessel USNS Mary Sears, was christened.

Members who attended the convention were: Liz Ehman, Karen Fussell, Ruth Gaerig, Barbara Grooters, Marie Harvey, Bettie Johnson, Avis Lowe, Dolores Maillette, Eleanor Robinson, Jan Roy, Mariann Sielawa, Ruth Smith, Mary Lou Unterburger, Shirley Croucher, Rachel Babcock. A great time was had by all. The 2002 convention will be held in Portland, Oregon. The regional conference will be in Canton, Ohio, May 9-10. It’s a great way to get to know your shipmates better.

Please remember to bring your unwrapped door prizes and/or favors to the All Service Women’s Luncheon in Frankenmuth November 11. Irene Zeilinger is hostess for this event.

The December 9 Christmas luncheon will be hosted by Mary Lou Unterburger and will be held at Weber’s in Ann Arbor (see registration form). (Continued on page 2)
