Bettie’s By-line

March 17, along with several Unit 32 members, I attended a testimonial reception and banquet given by the Military Order of the Purple Heart in honor of national auxiliary president, Shirley Van Buren. It was evident that she is highly respected by her peers in this organization. Marion Grattan, Virginia Maitland, Eleanor Robinson, Ruth Smith, Stella Staley and I were proud to claim her as a member of Unit 32.

Since I last saw you, I attended my American Business Women’s Spring Conference in Charleston, West Virginia, returned to Detroit, waited three hours at the airport and then flew to Charleston, South Carolina. A roundabout route! I visited a roommate with whom I was stationed in Brooklyn, New York. After 50 years, we had many memories to share.

Returning home April 29, I left again on May 3 for the WN Regional Conference in Canton, Ohio. Whew! I’m getting too old to do this very often. I said “getting” too old, not “I am” too old. I’ll never admit that. Avis Lowe, Ruth Gaerig and I were proud to represent our unit at the meeting.

We’re going up north for our June 2 meeting, giving the northerners a break. It should be a fun meeting. Our hostesses are Marion Dunstan and Ellen Waggoner. Wanda Kearns and Stella Staley will present an “Antique Road Show.” Bring along that old item that you’ve wondered about “It’s over 50 years old, but is it valuable or just junk?” This is your chance to get an opinion from a member in the antique business. We’ll have a lot of laughs and maybe a windfall for someone.

Our former president, Mary Mitchell, now living in Florida, has been in the hospital, but is recovering at home under the care of her son, Blair. Mary would enjoy hearing from her Navy friends. Her address is: 2290 Ocean Shore, Unit 202, Ormond Beach, FL 32176.

Wanda Kearns has been in the hospital, but is on the mend, as is Dolores Maillette after a bout with the flu. I hope the end of winter will bring better health to our members.

I will report on the regional meeting next month. Until then, enjoy Spring and stay well!   Bettie

Volunteer Forms Due in June

Stella Staley, Volunteer Services Chair, reminds us that volunteer forms for service from June 1, 2000—May 31, 2001, are due in June. There are two different forms: one for volunteer work at a Veterans Facility and one for all other community service work. Both forms are to be mailed to Ruby Homick, WN Volunteer Chair, with a copy to Stella. Their addresses are on the forms.

Volunteer forms may be obtained by calling Stella at 517-393-3086, or writing to her at 4131 Thackin Drive, Lansing, MI 48911.
