Elections in the news

by Dolores Maillette

The presidential campaign may be put on hold while WAVES National members prepare to elect their own 2000-02 officers. Biographies of WN candidates were printed in the April issue of WHITE CAPS, and mail-in ballots are forthcoming in June. Two Michigan women are running for National office. Jan Roy is seeking her second term as president, and Shirley Lightle is a nominee for first vice president.

MI Unit 32 officers will be elected at the June 3 meeting in Chesaning. A mail-in ballot is included in this issue for those unable to attend. Nominations from the floor will also be accepted. Following are the biographies of our MI Unit 32 candidates for 2000-02.

President

Bettie Johnson was born in Ohio, but grew up in Michigan. She graduated from the Pontiac school system and went to work for Michigan Bell Telephone Company in 1941. In 1944 she joined the WAVES and went to boot camp at Hunter College. She was on Shore Patrol until orders were received to help set up WAVE barracks in Brooklyn, New York. After promotion to SP(X) 3c, she was transferred to

work on the switchboard at Manhattan Towers, NYC.

Discharged in 1946, Bettie returned to Michigan where she held many managerial positions with Michigan Bell before retiring after 40 years of service.

She joined WN in 1980, and was a charter member of Unit 32. She has held the office of vice president and has volunteered for many duties

Vice President

Avis Lowe enlisted in the Navy in Jacksonville, Florida, January 13, 1943. She spent six weeks at OCS in Northampton, Massachusetts, and was then assigned to the Tampa Shipbuilding Company in Florida.

Technically the Communications Officer, she had varied duty, including reports to BuShips on construction progress , insurance involvement, and approval of contract payments. As a result of her record keeping, the shipyard received the Army-Navy "E" award.
