Minutes of Luncheon Meeting – 27 Feb 2000 Midway Best Western – Lansing Preceding the buffet luncheon, Julia Barrett lead the Pledge of Allegiance, members read the Unit 32 creed in unison and Irene Zeilinger gave the invocation. Brig. General John Kulhavi, the speaker, was introduced by Wanda Kearns. Gen. Kulhavi, president of the Vietnam Monument Commission of Michigan, reviewed the fund raising for the monument designed for the west side of the State Capitol and presented a framed, signed artist rendering of the monument. Wanda gave the general the unit’s donation, a check for $265. The meeting was called to order by Marion Grattan, president. A memorial service for Audrey Feagins, Barbara Leon, Joan Nester Leone, Helen Smith and Arlene VanPeeren was conducted by Irene Zeilinger, chaplain, and WN president Jan Roy moved a donation of $25 for each of the deceased members, a total of $125, be made to the Great Lakes Museum. Seconded and approved. Special Reports: WN president Jan Roy gave the call to convention at Cleveland and outlined the agenda. Regional director, Vickie Lisenbee, thanked all for their expressions of sympathy at the time of the loss of her husband. Vickie reported Unit 137 may arrange for a bus from Michigan to Cleveland for the convention. She will keep us posted. State director, Eleanor Robinson, also a member of the WN nominating committee, said Jan Roy is running for reelection and Shirley Lightle of Unit 101 is a candidate for first vice president. Committee Reports: Historian Ruth Smith displayed scrapbooks, and as liaison to Unit 101, reported a Unit 32 delegation attended the 101 February luncheon. Membership chairman Bettie Johnson stated that we have 115 members. Mike Kegley of the Naval Ship Museum, Bay City, gave dates for fund raiser projects. Dolores Maillette, newsletter editor passed out an "extra" edition of SHORELINES published for the meeting, and stated that she would like members to submit biographies for the "Profiles" page of MI Unit 32’s Web site. Volunteer hours chairman Stella Staley has forms to send to WN for the May deadline. Women veterans project coordinator Shirley Croucher reported that personal "ditty" bags have been delivered to VA hospitals and materials are available to make more. New Business: Julia Barrett said Wanda Olson is in a nursing home at 5555 Highland., Milford, MI 48381, and suggested keeping her name on the membership list. Yetive Szkotnicki moved that the unit |
pay Wanda’s dues.
Seconded and approved.

Joan Nester Leone, 75, died November 29, 1999. She served in the Navy from September 21, 1944 to July 11, 1946, as a Storekeeper. Her duty station was NAS Grosse Ile, MI. Helen Louise Smith, 66, died January 14, 2000. She was a Korean War veteran, serving with the Navy from September 4, 1951 until August 24, 1954 at Quonset Point, RI. We send our condolences to these families. |

Webmaster, Robert Maillette of Boston, has recently updated the "Profiles" section to include 21 biographies of WWII WAVES from the state of Washington. These were compiled by Delores Walk of Unit 140 who is also putting them in booklet form. |
