From your editor…..   wpeF.jpg (1703 bytes)

The big news is that our Web site: www.womenofthewaves.com, (Web editor's note: I changed this link to the NEW Web site) is getting a great response from all over the United States. Many other WN Web pages have linked to ours, and we have links to theirs. If you have access to a computer, check it out.

We hope that you are planning to attend the April 17th meeting at the Saginaw River Coast Guard Station in Bay City! We will go through the chow line and eat in the mess hall. Chef Patrick O’Hare loves to cook, and he promises a gourmet meal, including his own home made dinner rolls. One of the women sailors has promised to update us on women’s role in the Coast Guard, and we will have a tour of the facilities. Our Saginaw Navy League met there last September and enjoyed every minute. (Your editor has finally caught the terrible FLU!)

Books and your library…..

 By Ann-Marie Amthor

Have you ever looked in your library for books about women in the military? If not, check your local library to see if there are any on the shelves. There were none at the three libraries in this area of Florida. When I asked each librarian why there were no books on military women, none of them could explain it, but did agree there should be some.

One of the librarians was willing to order a book, and when she didn’t know what to order, I took her a list of books available through WIMSA. I suggested she order Service Women in World War II by Maj. Gen. Jeanne M. Holm, USAF (ret), which she did. It covers all the services. Now we are waiting to see what happens.

Through Interlibrary Loan, I requested a book entitled American Women in World War I by Lettie Gavin. Put this book on your "must read" list. It covers the period between 1914 and 1918. These ladies were ahead of their time, and certainly proved how capable and persevering women can be, just as we did recently. How proud we are that we served!

Make it a point to go to your library, or call the librarian to see if any books are on their shelves pertaining to women in the military. If there are none, ask "Why not?" We are an important part of history, and should be recognized!
