President’s Corner…..

Hard to believe winter is almost over. Outside of a cold that would not go away, it has been a good winter for me, and a busy one.

I felt we had a good meeting today (February 27th) and it was nice to get the bylaws details settled and to have discussion from the floor on agenda items. That committee now has their work cut out for them to re-word, re-number and make the major changes voted at the December meeting.

clown.jpg (5370 bytes)Shirley Pittenger spoke on her experiences traveling with Dr. Patch Adams as a clown. Yes, the same Dr. Adams whose story is told in the movie by the same name. They toured Russia in 1997, visiting orphanages, children’s hospitals and actor retirement homes. Dr. Adams believes in laughter as a healing agent, and the practice of medicine as a service, not a business. Shirley, who has been clowning for 12 years, spoke from her heart, and is looking forward to going with Dr. Adams’ group again.

Thank you, Sara Feldbauer, Betty Swartz and Marie Harvey for your willingness to serve as our nominating committee. It was agreed that our unit stay with the one-year terms and start the two-year terms in the year 2000, which will put us in "sync" with National, as requested.

Congratulations to Shirley and Martin Van Buren of Jackson on their 53rd wedding anniversary February 27th!

Condolences to Yetive Szkotnicki of Grayling who lost her son in January.

Dick and I will be off on our "winter break" March 4th for a week at Harbour Island in South Carolina. Visiting friends on the way home will get us back to Alma by the 19th.

The calendar says the first day of Spring is March 20. Think Spring...and Happy Easter! - Shirley

House Resolution 41 Honoring WWII Military Women

Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) has introduced a resolution to honor women who served in WWII. House Resolution 41, "Honoring American Military Women for their Service in World War II," honors, commends and recognizes "that these women, by serving with diligence and merit, not only opened up opportunities for women that had been reserved to men, but also contributed vitally to the victory of the United States and the Allies in World War II." We are encouraged to write to our representatives, asking them to support this resolution.
