From the President

Bettie JohnsonThe new Unit 32 executive board is in place and ready to start the new year with enthusiasm and eagerness to serve Unit 32.

Since our last meeting I have been wrapping up several obligations in order to concentrate on Unit 32 business. I have had a busy June and July. I worked on and attended my 59th class reunion luncheon. Mary Mitchell joined us for that. She stayed with me for a few days and we used my winning tickets to the Hudson Fireworks Party. What a blast! We also attended Unit 101’s annual picnic. Mary, who was in Michigan to be with her sister while she had surgery, has returned to Florida.

The City of Novi honored WWII veterans during the last few weeks. The local TV station reviewed books about World War II, including Tom Brokaw’s “The Greatest Generation,” and others by men and women veterans. High school seniors studied WWII and set up a website: hs.novi.k12.mi.us/ww2. Several of us were interviewed. You sure can goof under the bright lights. I can hardly wait to hear what I said.

Novi veterans were honored at the

Civic Center on July 2. The band played patriotic songs and veterans displayed WWII memorabilia much of which brought back memories of the war days. A musical program by senior citizens was followed by awarding of certificates signed by Senator Spencer Abraham and Representative Knollenberg. Only two women were present: an Army nurse and myself. I did pick up certificates for Henrietta Korte, a Unit 32 member.

When I sat down to write this message, I thought I had very little to say. Now I realize it’s all about me. My next message should have more about Unit 32 members.

I do want to thank Eleanor Robinson who set up the board meeting place. It will be in the British Isles (Okemos, not England) restaurant on July 15. Thanks, also, to Jan Roy who arranged for our September 30 meeting Nunica, which I understand, is north of Grand Rapids. We will talk about the All Service Women’s Luncheon at that meeting.

Enjoy the rest of your summer !

- Bettie
