Mail Call

Kathleen Hall, a member of our unit from Alpena, now on active duty, writes:

"Hi Ladies: Looks like I miss another Unit 32 Christmas party. Have been on board the USNS Shughart since 30 September and don’t expect to go home until near March. It’ll be a beige Christmas...that’s the color of the sand out here. God bless you all! Congratulations to Jan Roy!!!

Needed!

Members (or friends of members) to make ditty bags to be filled with small gifts for women vets in VA facilities, and/or volunteers to sew wash cloths for soap bags for the patients. We already have an abundance of small hotel soaps, as well as directions on how to put the cloths together.

From a letter to Delores Walk of Unit 140 in Spokane WA:

"In case you’re interested, I am the only female enlisted on board this ship; the only female in the Chief’s Mess. There are 17 female officers permanently embarked; the rest are approximately 2500 men. When the Air Wing is embarked, the number of men goes up to almost 5000. Needless to say, although I have always been a minority in the Navy, I have never felt it so strongly as now. The issues I have had to deal with here on this ship make me feel like we haven’t made much progress over the past 25 years."
