Condensed Minutes of December 5, 1998
Meeting
Schulers, Marshall, Michigan
President Shirley Croucher called the meeting to order at 1:45 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was followed by the Creed and Invocation by Chaplain Irene Zeilinger. Shirley thanked Pat and helpers for arranging luncheon, and introductions were made. Minutes of the October 11 meeting were read and accepted. State director, Eleanor Robinson, installed Betty Maloney as secretary as she was absent at June installation. Treasurer Pat Saint Amour reported a balance of $1302.64 in checking/savings. She said a current membership list will be distributed when new area codes are available. Committee Reports Membership: Florence Gaus reported 118 regular members and 2 associates. Historian: Ruth Smith just received the scrapbooks and will add what she has and continue to update. Labels: Doris Graham will mail to WN label chair in January. Special Funds: Shirley and Dick Croucher and Marian Van Haitsma delivered 25 ditty bags to Grand Rapids VA facility on November 6. She asked for help in sewing washcloth soap containers and saving hotel shampoos and soaps for bags. Shirley Pittenger recommended movie PATCH ADAMS, story of doctors visit to Russia. Shirley was member of group. Mary Lou Kaashoek told of giving soap-filled wash cloths to GR VA hospital. Jan Roy said Mary_______ is there and asked for cards. Irene has already sent her one.

Volunteer hours: Stella Staley has forms for recording hours. Bylaws: Jan Roy reported receipt of WN bylaws so Unit 32 can proceed with changes. Naval Ship Museum: Mike Kegley reported $75,000 has been raised. Coca-Cola contributing 25 cents of every 12-pack sold at certain stores. $1,050 given to date. State Director: Eleanor Robinson said no definite place/date for state-wide meeting, but will be a 2-day affair in UP. Region VII regional meet will be July 9-10 in Kentucky. Calling Committee: Will be rejuvenated. Let Eleanor know if you can help. Bettie Johnson and ruth Gaerig will serve the Detroit area. Correspondence Marie Harvey sent Shirley "Letter to Editor" written by Dorothy Lewis re Veterans Day.. Dorothy Graves illness prevented her from attending meeting. She would appreciate cards. Ella Wieberg, WN 1st VP, is asking for ideas for contest to recruit new members. Other reports We have membership with Womens Historical Center; do not confuse with MI Historical Museum. Shirley and Dick Croucher, Bettie Johnson, Avis Lowe, Joan Cebatoris, Mary and Mike Kegley and Dolores Maillette attended luncheon meeting of Navy League at the Saginaw Club. Shirley VanBuren urged us to save pop can tabs for local McDonalds. They will then be used to support Ronald McDonald homes in MI. A moment of silence was called in |
honor of Pearl Harbor Day. Winners of 50/50 drawing were: Avis Lowe, Virginia Maitlandd and Helen Jansen. Poinsettia plants and table decorations were won by: Lydia Wyatt, Mike Kegley, Norrene Dreffs, Martin VanBuren, Mariann Sielaws, Mary McMorrow and Mary Lou Unterburger. New Business Feasibility of forming groups representing WN and Unit32 to attend funerals of members was discussed Contributions for VA facilities may be placed in box in lieu of gift exchange. This supplements 50/50 monies for special funds committee. Bylaw Changes: See Pg 3. MI Womens Historical Center: Moved that MI Unit 32 renew $50 membership. Navy Womens Foundation: Moved that $50 donation be sent to honor 1998 deceased members, Charlotte Eddy and Charlotte Volland. Important Dates: See Pg. 2.
