Bettie Johnson welcomed everyone. All recited the Unit 32
pledge and Karen Fussell led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Julia Barrett gave the invocation and read an article on the
origin of “Taps.”
Luncheon: Hosted by Patricia Saint Amour.
Introductions: Members and guests were
introduced. Sara Feldbauer, a former member of our unit now
living in Wauseon, Ohio, was present. She has joined a WAVES
unit in her area.
Program: The History of Marshall—Sue VanZandt, Speaker..
Sue is a free lance writer who conducts tours of Marshall. She
gave a very interesting talk on the history of Marshall, which
was founded in 1831 and named after John Marshall. A question
and answer session followed.
Secretary’s Report—Virginia Maitland: Report
approved as printed. Virginia delivered ten lap robes to the
VA Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. A letter was read from
the VFW thanking us for our donation to the WWII memorial.
Treasurer’s Report– Pat Saint Amour: Pat
reported $1,020.99 in checking and $817.10 in savings, making
a total of $1,838.09.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Campbell Labels/Veterans Projects—Shirley Croucher
Shirley stated that lap robes have been delivered to VA
hospitals in Grand Rapids, Saginaw and Ann Arbor.
Historian/Unit 101 Coordinator—Ruth Smith
Not present.
Membership—Avis Lowe
There are 113 members.
Newsletter—Dolores Maillette
Not present.
Ship Museum—Mike Kegley
Mike stated that 28 school districts have signed on to the
education program.
Volunteer Hours—Stella Staley
Stella stated we had 6,734 volunteer hours as of 5-31-01.

Public Relations—Wanda Kearns
Wanda stated that ten people in her group attended the
dedication of the Vietnam Memorial in Lansing. The memorial is
complete, but the grounds are not.
Volunteer Hours—Stella Staley: Stella urged
everyone to keep track of volunteer hours.
Unfinished Business: Mariann Sielawa
has volunteered to collect and send cards to VA hospitals.
Emergency Medical Form: Be sure to turn in your
form.
Profiles: Bettie urged everyone to turn in their
profile along with a photograph. Dolores Maillette volunteered
to put them in book form.
New Business: Bettie had an updated list of
women veterans in the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Members
adopted all of them.
Jan Roy stated that a new WAVES National unit has been formed
in Norfolk, Virginia.
A new type of membership card is in the process of being
designed. They will be available in February.
