News from
other WAVES National units

Roadrunner Unit 04 of Albuquerque New Mexico had to
cancel the All Women Veteran’s lunch because of base security
at
Kirtland
AFB. The strict security since September 11th will necessitate
finding a new central location for their meetings. Mary Cox
(whom President Jan McSparren describes as “young and
vigorous” ) is their vice-president, and also serves as deputy
representative to VAVS on behalf of WAVES National. The
Roadrunners were instrumental in having a special rose “The
Veterans Honor Rose,” planted at the Santa Fe National
Cemetery. Jackson & Perkins Company has pledged 10% of the
proceeds from the rose’s sale to the VA’s medical research
programs nationwide.

Lake Erie
WAVES Unit 128 toured the Ohio Veterans Home and
were impressed with the “squeaky clean” atmosphere and all of
the activities in progress, with the halls visibly alive with
the comings and goings of the residents. There are over 600
employees overseeing the needs of 740 residents. One of their
members, Clara Brockmueller, works as a volunteer on the USS
Lexington while she winters in Corpus Christi, TX.

North
Coast Waves Unit 21
in Ohio celebrated their Christmas party at
Gatsby’s in Austintown, Ohio. A collection was donated to Toys
for Tots. Like most of our units, they are having a tough time
finding members willing to run for office in the May 2002
election; they suggest that individuals come to a board
meeting to see how decisions for the good of the membership
are reached. (Ed. Note: This is a good idea for Unit 32, too.
You are always welcome to attend our board meetings.)

The
Sunshine State Waves’ newsletter is published by WN
FL State Director Barb Turner who is also Program Coordinator
for the Armed Services Department at the Pensacola Area
Chamber of Commerce. She tells of the many events celebrated
during Military Appreciation Month in November, beginning with
the kickoff at the National Museum of Naval Aviation with over
500 in attendance. Barb invites all to Florida’s 2002 State
Conference. (See invitation on Page 2)

WHITE CAPS
reminds us of the upcoming WN National Convention in Portland,
Oregon, August 27-31, 2002. They promise special room rates,
tours, trolley rides, unique shops and eateries, as well as a
WWII sub, the USS Blueback, to visit. A list of convention
items to purchase ahead of time will be published in the
February issue. Also, the application for the 2002 WN
Scholarship is printed in the December issue. The deadline for
applying for the $1,000 scholarship is March 1, 2002.
