Bettie’s By-line

‘Tis the end of another year! As I review 2001, I see that we were involved in many exciting things. We had a program at every meeting: in April a poet; an antique road show in June; the tall ships in July; the All Service Women’s Luncheon where we heard General Carol Mutter, USMC (Ret) in September; Michigan’s involvement in the history of space in October; and the history of Marshall in December. Having speakers at our meetings has been a big, rewarding change in our agenda.

Other, not so nice things, took place. We lost several members and they are greatly missed. Our nation suffered a terrible tragedy on September 11th which led us into war. Most of us, were we younger, would consider re-enlisting. One of our members, Captain Anna Mae Clark, has been re-activated. She is working for Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C.

Many of us attended the WN regional conference in Canton, Ohio, in May, and enjoyed the camaraderie of old and new friends. The next convention will be the national in Portland, Oregon, August 27-31, 2002. Hope you are saving for that one; it should be great. Portland is a beautiful city, and

it sounds like the tours will allow us to see all it offers.

The women veterans’ quilt was displayed in the state capitol for the month of July and was admired by many of our senators and congressmen.

One of our members was honored by the Order of the Purple Heart for her service to that organization.

We sent $320 to the Defense Intelligence Relief Fund for the immediate families of victims of the September 11th attack on the Pentagon.

All in all, it has been a busy, productive year, and I look forward to another active, fulfilling year in 2002. I hope everyone had a happy holiday season and that the new year will be full of rewards and good times.

Please join us February 2 at Tony M’s
in Lansing for the first meeting of the new year. Maybe the ground hog will favor us with good weather.

- Bettie
