Shirley’s Scribbles….
By Shirley Croucher
Doris Graham and I want to
thank those members who saved manufacturers’ coupons to be
sent overseas to military families. Commissaries will redeem
them for six months after expiration date. Keep clipping
and sending!
Needed….a WAVE hat to complete a blue
dress uniform for the display being put together at the
Kalamazoo History Museum. Jan Barrett requested a uniform and
Bettie Johnson donated one belonging to Mary Jo Ryan. Mary Jo’s
niece, Cynthia Grelecki, had asked that it be sent to a
museum. Our unit supplied a white blouse, Bettie Johnson gave
a regulation purse, and I bought an authentic pin at the
Cleveland Convention. However, we still need a HAT, and if you
can donate one, call me at 517-463-3765.
This past Veterans’ Day, the activity
department at Masonic Pathways sponsored a program for
veterans. Besides the 60+ male veterans living at the home,
there were four female veterans. I was one of them. I wore my
WAVE sweatshirt and overseas cap and with two of the women in
wheelchairs, felt very fortunate to be mobile. One woman, a
former major in the Army Nurse Corps, served in Casablanca,
Iran and Naples with the 17th General Hospital.
I received an invitation from a Senior Girl
Scout to speak at Alma High School. Along with an American
Legion friend who had been a paratrooper, we visited three
government classes, telling our story and answering questions.
I have now been asked to speak with middle school students as
well. These events were a new experience for me. It felt good
to help educate others about what we did in service.
