Bettie’s By-line

Many things have happened since I last wrote. On Veterans’ Day, our unit sponsored the 14th annual All Service Women’s Luncheon in Frankenmuth, hosted by Irene Zeilinger. If you did not attend, you missed a great event. 133 veterans, active duty service women and guests attended. The weather was gorgeous, the food was excellent, the lodge was beautifully decorated, the speaker was informative, there were enough door prizes for everyone, raffle prizes were sought after and members helped make it a memorable day. My thanks to all who helped.

The Christmas luncheon hosted by Mary Lou Unterberger at Weber’s in Ann Arbor was also a very nice affair. Again, the weather cooperated, but attendance was disappointing. Captain Amy McCall and Major Jane Young, USAF, spoke on women in military service today, crediting veterans for opening doors for them.

Eight women veterans in the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans were “adopted” by some of our members who will send birthday and holiday cards to them. Shirley Croucher also sent personal gift bags to members, Mary Kaashock and Wanda Olson

Olson who are in nursing homes.

Members in and out of sick bay include: Dorothy Reed who has had a pacemaker implanted. Her address is: 1220 N. Genesee Drive, Lansing, MI 48915. Jamelia Manson went to Italy for a wedding and fell getting off the plane. She broke her leg and had to spend time in the hospital there. She is home now and her address is: 117 Park Meadows, Lansing, MI 48917. Marie Harvey and Lois Leak have been hospitalized but are recuperating. We hope all will be on their feet soon.

On December 16th, I received word that Betty Maloney passed away from heart problems.Betty was our secretary last year and was always willing to help where needed. She will be missed. Our sympathy goes out to her family.

The next board meeting will be at the Delhi Café in Holt, February 3 at 1 p.m. Directions: I-96 to Exit 104 (Holt/Pennsylvania). Left at 1st light onto Pennsylvania Ave. South through blinking light. Left next Exit (Cedar St.) South. After Ponderosa and before Holiday Inn, turn left onto Willoughby St. Delhi Café in strip mall on right.

Our next regular meeting is February 24 in Williamston.    Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and I wish all a Happy New Year. - Bettie
