April Groundbreaking for Vietnam MemorialGround breaking for the Lansing Vietnam Memorial is expected to take place in April at the Michigan State Capitol complex. The land, a former parking lot, was donated by the State of Michigan, and the State also contributed $1,000,000 toward the memorial. In addition to the building, a wall listing names of the Michigan servicemen who died in Vietnam will be erected. Army Brig. Gen John Kulhavi and Christine Riddle of the MI Dept. of
Veterans Affairs will present an update on the memorial at Unit 32 ‘s
luncheon meeting in Lansing on Sunday, 27 February. Wanda Kearns is Unit
32’s liaison with the Vietnam Memorial Commission. |

Women Vets Coordinator speaks at Navy League lunch Joan Cebatoris, R.N., the Women Veterans Coordinator at the Alda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw, was the featured speaker for the Navy League luncheon at the Saginaw Club, January 10. She gave a detailed history of women in the military, from the Revolutionary War to the present. Joan is a Commander in the Naval Reserve in Saginaw, and a member of Unit 32. She served active duty as a Navy nurse. The Alda Lutz VA Medical Center is the first to be dedicated to a female veteran. Their goal is to provide health care to all eligible women veterans in lower Michigan with emphasis on health promotion and prevention of illness and disease.

Convention 2000
The 13th biennial convention of WAVES National will be held at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio, September 5-9, 2000. Western Reserve Unit 133 will host the event, with the help of North Coast WAVES Unit 21, Buckeye Breakers Unit 65, WAVES Fore and Aft Unit 72 and Lake Erie WAVES Unit 128. Chairman Jeanne Clough has promised interesting, fun tours in "The Renaissance City," including a visit with the Amish and a dinner cruise on Lake Erie, in addition to the necessary business meetings. The convention committee is asking for one door prize from each unit, as well as an item with the unit logo to use as a table favor or put in their tote bags. Units are also asked to purchase an ad in the convention program. Watch for more details in the next issue WHITE CAPS and reservation forms in the "Call to Convention." |
