From your editor…..   Editor

We hope you like this new format. It’s another effort to make our newsletter interesting and easy to read. Your comments are welcome. Also welcome are your stories….where you were stationed, the interesting people you met, the exciting adventures you had. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling; we’ll edit.

Michigan Unit 32 now has a Web Page! You can reach it at: womenofthewaves.com. It was designed by my son, Robert, and is linked to the WN website, as well as other units’ pages and related sites, including Oklahoma State University’s page with pictures of the Navy Yeoman School. It includes the current issue of SHORELINES, and there is a guestbook where you can enter your comments. Bob is constantly revising and updating, so keep checking! - Dolores

Profiles…..Bettie Johnson

(From Ameritech "VALUES" - December 1998)

Bettie JohnsonFormer Navy WAVE Bettie Archer Johnson may have retired after 40 years with Michigan Bell, but she still has a military mission, of sorts—–finding other women who served in the military so they can be included in a biographical database at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. "We’re trying to be sure that all women who ever served in the military are recognized," she said, "so that they’ll know now and in future generations what women did in the military."

On August 1, 1944, Johnson and several other women stood on an old state hospital baseball field in Pontiac, and were sworn in as WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She left her position as a switchboard supervisor with Michigan Bell, went through boot camp in the Bronx, was assigned to help open a Navy barracks in Brooklyn and later transferred to Manhattan. In May 1945, she joined the throng in Times Square celebrating the victory in Europe and, three months later, celebrated the victory over Japan. That November, she rode in a Navy "duck," an amphibious vehicle, in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Fifty years later, she walked the same route in the Veterans’ Day Parade celebrating the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

After the war, she returned to Michigan Bell and served as chief toll operator, information chief operator, then as a switchboard engineer with PBX and toll. She retired in 1982 as staff manager in charge of operator studies for Michigan.
