Presidents Corner .. I hope you all had a joyful holiday season with your family and friends! As I write, the grass is still green, but it may be snow covered by the time you read this.
Our Christmas meeting at Schulers in Marshall was lovely. Hostess, Pat Saint Amour, arranged for two poinsettias and several other door prizes to add to the 50/50 drawing fun. Thank you, Pat! State director, Eleanor Robinson, installed Betty Maloney as secretary of our unit. Betty was not able to attend the annual June meeting when the other officers were installed. Campbell labels are due, and pop can tabs are welcome. Shirley VanBuren said local donations of tabs will be used for Ronald McDonald houses in Michigan. We are pleased to be able to reactivate the calling committee. Eleanor Robinson has volunteered to chair this group which will "keep in touch" with members and, hopefully, increase attendance at meetings. She will also investigate the plausibility of forming groups around the state to represent WN and MI 32 at funerals of members. The ditty bags given to women veterans at VA facilities were so well received that the special funds committee decided to tackle a project like that again. A 60 lb. box of shampoos, lotions, soaps, etc., from my daughter, Candace, has given us a head start, and we have funds to purchase other items. The Christmas meeting contribution of $50 will be added to the 50/50 monies reserved for this purpose. Shirley Pittenger urges us to see DR. PATCH ADAMS, the movie starring Robin Williams. This is the story of the doctor who headed a group which traveled to Russia, visiting hospitals. Shirley toured with them for two weeks as a clown, bringing joy and laughter into the lives of the patients. I was pleased that WN was able to make good on the commitment to purchase a patriot chair for the WIMSA auditorium. All three Michigan units, as well as many individual members supported it, according to the report in WHITE CAPS. The American Legion Auxiliary magazine reports that Legionnaires will continue to fight for passage of the flag protection amendment which was lost in the 105th Congress. Have a healthy and prosperous New Year!! - - - - - Shirley |
